Where to Buy Furniture in Kansas City: Complete Guide
If you're searching "where to buy furniture in Kansas City," you've got options. A lot of options. Let me break down what's actually available - from someone who works in this market every day.
The Kansas City Furniture Landscape
Kansas City has a weird furniture market. You've got:
- Local stores that have been here for decades
- National chains trying to compete
- The giant up in Omaha that people actually drive to
- A mix of new, used, and everything in between
Here's what I tell people when they ask where to shop:
Furniture Stores by Area
Overland Park / Johnson County
This is where most of the furniture action happens. Metcalf Avenue between 95th and 110th has probably six furniture stores within a mile.
Furniture Deals (where I work): 10360 Metcalf Ave. Budget to mid-range, large showroom where you can actually sit on everything. Flat-rate delivery ($139.99) anywhere in greater KC.
Crowley Furniture: Also on Metcalf. More traditional styles, higher price points. Been in KC forever.
What this means for you: You can park once and hit multiple stores in an afternoon. Wear comfortable shoes.
Kansas City, Missouri (North of the River)
Fewer options up north, but:
- Some smaller independents
- Easier parking than Johnson County
- Less traffic if you're coming from the north
If you live in KCMO, the drive to Overland Park is about 20 minutes. See our Kansas City, MO furniture guide.
Independence / Eastern Jackson County
More limited. Most people from Independence drive to Overland Park or shop online.
Online furniture shopping has its place, but here's the problem: you can't sit on a website. You can't see the actual color of the fabric. You can't tell if that "plush" sofa is actually firm.
What About the Big Store in Omaha?
Nebraska Furniture Mart. Yeah, people from Kansas City drive up there.
Pros: Massive selection. If you need furniture AND appliances, it's comprehensive. You could spend a whole day there.
Cons: It's 3 hours away. If something doesn't fit when you get home, that's a 6-hour round trip to return it. When you buy in Kansas City, you're 20 minutes from the store.
My advice: If you're doing an entire house from scratch AND want appliances too, consider the drive. For everything else, the selection in Kansas City is good enough.
New vs. Used Furniture
You'll see used furniture stores around Kansas City too.
What I tell people: If you're looking at used, check the construction. Sit on it. Check for creaking. Look underneath at the frame. Furniture Deals sells new furniture - but you do save the "someone else's habits" gamble.
The used market is fine for some things. I wouldn't buy a used mattress, though. Just... don't.
What to Ask When You Shop
No matter where you go in Kansas City, ask these questions:
- "Is this in stock, or do I have to wait?" Some stores order after you buy. That can mean 6-8 weeks.
- "What's the delivery fee, and where exactly do you deliver?" Some places charge per piece. Some have mileage limits.
- "Can I see the tag price minus the 'sale'?" Some furniture stores have perpetual sales. The "real" price is somewhere in there.
- "What's your return policy?" If you get it home and it doesn't fit, what happens?
- "Who do I call if something's wrong?" Local store vs. 800 number matters.
Why People Choose Furniture Deals (Where I Work)
I'm not going to tell you it's the only place to shop. But here's what customers tell me:
- The price is the price. No perpetual sales, no "today only" pressure.
- You can sit on everything. The showroom is huge.
- Delivery is straightforward. $139.99 flat rate in greater KC. They show up when scheduled.
- I'm local. When you call, you might get me. Or someone else who works there. Not a call center.
Location: 10360 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS
If You're Coming From...
Olathe: 15 minutes up Metcalf. Easy drive.
Lenexa: 10-12 minutes. Basically the next major intersection south.
Shawnee: 20 minutes. Worth it for the selection.
Leawood: 5 minutes. You can probably see it from your neighborhood.
Kansas City, MO: 20-25 minutes depending on traffic. Still closer than Omaha.
The Bottom Line
Kansas City has good furniture options. You don't need to drive to Omaha unless you want to.
If you want to see what's available locally, come by Furniture Deals. I'm Eric. I'll show you what fits your space and budget - and if what you need is somewhere else, I'll tell you that too.
This is my personal site. I'm not the store - I'm the guy who works there. Come say hi.
